In what can only be described as a moment of cricketing drama, Bangladesh's star batsman Najmul Hossain Shanto's sensational innings came to an abrupt end in the Asia Cup 2023 Group B match on Sunday.

Shanto's unexpected slip brought an end to a stunning knock

After scoring a sublime century that steered Bangladesh to a commanding position against their opponents, Shanto was unfortunately dismissed in an unexpected manner. The moment that everyone will be talking about from the game was not a massive six or a boundary but the unfortunate runout that ended Shanto's stunning knock in the most unfortunate manner.

On the third ball of the 45th over, Shanto attempted a daring reverse sweep off Mujeeb ur Rahman. Hoping to steal a quick single, he set off immediately only to find the ball speeding straight to Najibullah Zadran at backward point.

Recognizing the potential danger, Shanto made a desperate attempt to reverse his decision and retreat to the crease. However, an untimely slip in the middle of the pitch left him in no man’s land. With quick thinking, Zadran hurled the ball towards wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who made no mistake and dislodged the bails in the blink of an eye.

Najmul Hossain Shanto's performance was undoubtedly the highlight of the day, scoring a splendid 104 off 105 balls, filled with nine boundaries and two sixes. His departure, though disappointing, will remain one of the most talked-about dismissals of the tournament.

Earlier in the innings, Bangladesh faced a hiccup, losing two early wickets as they were reduced to 63/2. It was Shanto, alongside Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who was promoted up the order, that engineered a magnificent recovery. The duo compiled a massive 215-run partnership with both scoring centuries. Unfortunately, Mehidy had to retire hurt after scoring 112.

With valuable contributions from the lower order in the dying stages of the innings, Bangladesh posted a huge score of 334/5 in their 50 overs.
