Najmul Hossain Shanto is one of the brightest talents in Bangladesh cricket currently and has grown from strength to strength in the last year or so. He was named the captain of the Bangladesh Test side for the two-match series against New Zealand, and in the first Test match at Sylhet, he has started off with a bang, smashing a century in the second innings of the Test match.

He achieved that feat on the third day of the Test match and joined an elite list of batters who scored a century on their Test captaincy debut. He became the 32nd player in the history of the game to get to achieve this remarkable feat which includes big names like Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Steve Smith, Chanderpaul to name a few.

In the first innings of the Test match, he scored quickfire 37 off 35 balls but could not convert it into a big score as Bangladesh gave away a seven-run lead at the end of the first innings. In the second innings, he came out to bat at number 3 in the 13th over with Bangladesh losing their first wicket on 23. Shanto looked comfortable right from the ball one, and mixed caution with aggression beautifully as he build a solid partnership with Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim.

Mominul departed on 40 but Rahim is still batting with Shanto as Bangladesh ended their day at 212-3 with a lead of 205 runs and two complete days to play with. Shanto is batting on 104 while Mushfiqur Rahim is batting on 43 off 71 balls and the match is quite evenly poised, going into the all-important fourth day of the Test match.
