New Zealand extended their overnight score past Bangladesh’s first innings effort to secure a mere seven-run lead on the third morning. Kyle Jamieson scored a useful 23 from 70 balls while captain Tim Southee produced a rapid 35 before both were removed by Mominul Haque in a space of four deliveries at the halfway stage of the opening session.

Shanto overcomes early runouts with sublime ton

Bangladesh skipper and in-form number three Najmul Hossain Shanto arrived to the crease following Ajaz Patel’s early removal of opener Zakir Hasan. Fellow opening batsman Mahmudul Hasan Joy was also dismissed a while later, albeit via an unfortunate runout towards the non-striker’s end.

Unfazed by top-order jitters, captain Shanto marched on with a counterattacking third-wicket stand with Mominul Haque. Emboldened by his twin strikes with the ball in the morning, Mominul produced four boundaries and shared 90 runs with his skipper to take Bangladesh’s lead past the 100-run mark.

His untimely dismissal moments after Tea break paved way for senior man Mushfiqur Rahim into the crease. Thereafter, the 36-year-old forged a patient and an unbroken 96-run alliance with Shanto, who himself went on to shape the fifth Test century of his career.

The two cricketers safely negotiated New Zealand’s spin threat and stretched their advantage to 205 runs by stumps on Day 3.
