Tensions ran high on the fourth day of the ongoing second Ashes 2023 Test between England and Australia at Lord's as a controversial catch by Mitchell Starc became the focal point of a heated debate. The incident occurred just two overs before stumps on Saturday, leaving fans and players alike in a state of frenzy.

Starc's Disputed catch of Duckett ignited firestorm at Lord's

England opener, Ben Duckett, amidst a heroic fightback in pursuit of a challenging target of 371, fell victim to Starc's apparently exceptional catch at the fine-leg region. The Australians erupted in joy, while a disheartened Duckett began his solemn walk back to the dressing room, having completed a gritty half-century amid the top-order collapse.

However, the on-field umpire, Marais Erasmus, had other ideas. Sensing a need for further scrutiny, he requested Duckett to hold his ground as he reviewed the legitimacy of Starc's catch.

Cameron Green bowled a well-directed short ball that prompted Duckett to execute an audacious ramp shot toward the left of the fine leg area. Displaying great agility, Starc darted towards the ball and appeared to have completed a sensational catch. However, an unfortunate turn of events transpired when Starc's body contacted the turf while maintaining contact with the ball.

Upon careful examination, the third umpire, Marais Erasmus, determined that Starc had not maintained full control over the ball before it made contact with the turf. In this pivotal ruling, it was concluded that the fielder's movement was not entirely in command, thereby invalidating the catch and granting a reprieve to Duckett, who missed out on a century in the first innings by two runs. 

Meanwhile, at the close of play, England found themselves at a challenging 114/4 in 31 overs, with the mammoth task of 257 runs still looming large. Duckett remained unbeaten on a well-earned half-century as he showcased tremendous resilience amidst the relentless onslaught from the Australian bowlers. England captain, Ben Stokes, ably supported the opener with 29 runs to his name as the duo stitched a budding partnership that will be vital to their survival on the fifth and final day.
