Melbourne Stars’ captain Marcus Stoinis had a moment to forget during the Big Bash League 2024-25 opener against the Perth Scorchers at the Perth Stadium. In a game where every run mattered, Stoinis found himself at the centre of a dramatic run-out that left him visibly frustrated, with his bat becoming the ultimate victim of his anger.

Marcus Stoinis’ Frustration Boils Over With Bat Throw After Stunning Run-Out

It was the final ball of the 12th over, bowled by Jhye Richardson. Marcus Stoinis, looking to keep the scoreboard ticking, drove the ball to mid-on and called for a quick single. But things went south in the blink of an eye.

Andrew Tye, sharp as ever at mid-on, swooped in, gathered the ball cleanly, and unleashed a rocket throw to the bowler’s end. Stoinis, despite putting in a full stretch to drag his bat over the line, was caught well short. The third umpire didn’t need much time to confirm the dismissal.

The Aussie all-rounder, clearly gutted, let his emotions get the better of him. As he realized he was out, Stoinis flung his bat in frustration and threw it onto the ground in a moment of pure anger. The crowd at the Perth Stadium witnessed the rare outburst from one of cricket’s usually composed figures.

Stoinis was the backbone of the Melbourne Stars’ innings at that point, having scored a steady 37 off 33 balls. He looked well set and ready to shift gears, which made his wicket a massive turning point.

Stars Looking To Up The Ante In Death Overs

With Stoinis gone, the Scorchers have the upper hand. His dismissal has not only broken the momentum but also left the Stars scrambling for a decent total. As they entered the death overs, the pressure is firmly on Beau Webster and Tom Curran to steer the ship.

At the time of writing, the Melbourne Stars are 119/5 after 16 overs. With Webster and Curran at the crease, the Stars were eyeing a total north of 160, but the Perth Scorchers’ bowlers will be hoping to keep the visitors under 150 and start their campaign with a strong win.
