[Watch] Joe Root Gets ‘Lucky’ As Third Umpire's Blunder Costs India ‘Burn DRS’

Joe Root could have gone for a two-ball duck on Thursday (January 25) during Day 1 of the first Test between India and England in Hyderabad, only if the third-umpire, Marais Erasmus, had taken much more time after what was visible through the UltraEdge.

Coming to bat at No. 4 in the first Test of the five-match series, Root went for a lap sweep against Ravindra Jadeja, who just took Ollie Pope's wicket. However, while playing the shot, the former England skipper lost his shape before the ball went on to hit his pad.

Immediately after, Jadeja as well as the rest of the Indian players went for a loud LBW shot, but the on-field umpire was not convinced to raise his finger. Rohit Sharma, after discussing for a while, decided to challenge the decision by signalling T.

Then, on the big screen, the UltraEdge showed there were a few murmurs when the ball was close to Root's bat. Erasmus did not take much time to analyse it, but later on, it turned out that those were not for the inside-edge, as there was a clear gap between bat and ball when that happened.

Opting to bat, England are on the verge of closing things off on a high note before going for lunch. They are 102/3, with Root and Jonny Bairstow in the middle, on 18* and 26* respectively.
