India's winning streak in T20Is came to a halt with a 12-run defeat in the first T20I of the three-match series against South Africa in Chennai. Tazmin Brits' blistering 81 helped the Proteas reach an imposing total, which proved insurmountable despite a fighting fifty from Jemimah Rodrigues.

Chasing a record target of 190 was always challenging, and losing wickets at regular intervals didn't help their cause.

A fiery start by Smriti Mandhana and Shafali put India on track, reaching the 50-run mark within five overs. Shafali was dismissed for a 14-ball 18 in the final over of the powerplay.

Mandhana continued her aggressive approach to keep the scoreboard moving, but Dayalan Hemalatha's struggles at the other end eventually affected the Indian vice-captain's rhythm, leading to her dismissal at the halfway mark with India at 87/2.

Hemalatha's dismissal further deepened the Women in Blue's troubles, leaving Jemimah Rodrigues and captain Harmanpreet Kaur at the crease. The pair found themselves playing catch-up, with Rodrigues looking more fluent.

They took their time to settle in, but the pressure mounted as the asking rate soared past 13 with just six overs remaining.

Although Rodrigues adjusted her tempo, Harmanpreet struggled to keep pace and that made all the difference in the end.

Meeting the required run rate of over ten runs per over proved to be a tough challenge. Mandhana and Rodrigues were the only ones who genuinely went for the chase.

Jemimah top-scored for the team with an unbeaten 53 off 30 balls, hitting a six and seven boundaries, but her efforts fell short for India.

Rodrigues was visibly disheartened after the loss, as seen in a video where she did not celebrate her fifty.

South Africa Women secured their first win on this tour of India, holding their nerves to draw first blood in the three-match T20I series.
