The Mumbai Indians Women (MIW) have flipped the script in a jaw-dropping turnaround in the second match of WPL 2025. The South African pacer, Shabnim Ismail dismissed Meg Lanning in a game-defining moment during their WPL 2025 opener against Delhi Capitals Women (DCW).
Chasing 165, Delhi seemed in cruise control at 60/1 inside six overs, thanks to Shafali Verma’s fireworks. But Shabnim Ismail’s fiery spell turned the tide, triggering a collapse that left the stadium roaring.
The Lanning Dagger; Full, Fast, and Fatal
With DCW reeling from Shafali’s dismissal, which was caught off Hayley Matthews, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur tossed the ball to veteran speedster Shabnim Ismail. The plan? Attack Lanning’s off-stump channel. A 119.2 kmph rocket, full and angling away, nipped back sharply as Lanning lunged forward for a drive. The ball sneaked past her tentative blade, clattering into the stumps.
The dismissal, clean, clinical, and crowd-silencing, left DCW staggering at 60/2 in 6.1 overs, losing both openers in three balls. Mumbai’s dugout erupted, sensing blood in the water. As soon as Ismail hit the timber, she couldn't hold back her emotions as she displayed raw emotions with a roar. Meg Lanning, disappointed with her innings returned back to the pavilion with 15 runs to her bag off 19 balls.
DC Women Close Down On Clinical Chase
At the time of writing, DCW is 109/4 after 14.4 overs. Alice Capsey and Niki Prasad now shoulder the chase after Annabel Sutherland (13 off 10) fell to Nat Sciver-Brunt’s clever slower ball.
The required rate is manageable as of now, but Mumbai’s bowlers are circling. Amelia Kerr and Sciver-Brunt are tightening the screws, while Ismail’s menacing spells loom large on DC batters as they aim to close in on the chasing total.
