As the IPL 2025 schedule is about to be released, Punjab Kings (PBKS) have found themselves amidst a controversy of sorts. While their fans are waiting eagerly for the home game lineup, there is some tension boiling behind the scenes between the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) and Punjab Kings.
Punjab Kings Pick Dharamsala for Key IPL 2025 Matches As PCA Raises Concerns
It all boils down to where Punjab Kings should play their seven home matches: Mullanpur or Dharamsala. According to reports, PBKS is keen on hosting three blockbuster games against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala.
But the PCA isn’t exactly thrilled about this move, given that they’re eager to showcase the newly built Mullanpur Stadium to the world.
Punjab Kings have a bit of history at both venues. Last season, they played five matches at the Mullanpur Stadium, which was hosting IPL games for the first time. They also played two late-season games in Dharamsala against Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Unfortunately, PBKS lost both their matches in Dharamsala, and their record at Mullanpur Stadium wasn’t much better, managing just one win out of five matches.
Despite those results, Shreyas Iyer led PBKS seems eager to take their biggest fixtures to Dharamsala. Why? It might have something to do with the breathtaking setting and the electric atmosphere at the HPCA Stadium, which sits in the lap of the Dhauladhar mountain range. With a 23,000 seating capacity, it’s one of the most picturesque cricket grounds in the world.
Meanwhile, Mullanpur Stadium, officially known as Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, is bigger and more modern with a capacity of 38,000 spectators. Since it’s relatively new, PCA wants PBKS to host key matches there to prove its readiness for future ICC and BCCI events.
Punjab Kings’ Plan for Dharamsala
Sources claim that Punjab Kings are keen on hosting three marquee matches against Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Dharamsala. These are three of the most popular teams in the league and they attract massive crowds wherever they play.
PBKS management is also planning to hold a preparatory camp at Dharamsala in early March, which hints that they’re pretty serious about using it as a major venue. But this hasn’t gone down well with the PCA, which is pushing for the Mullanpur Stadium to get more high-profile games.
With the IPL 2025 schedule expected to be announced soon, it will be interesting to see how this venue drama unfolds. Will PBKS get their wish and take the big games to Dharamsala or will the PCA have the final say and keep the high-profile fixtures at Mullanpur? Only time will tell.
