San Francisco Unicorns (SFU) all-rounder, Marcus Stoinis launched a blistering attack against his national teammate and Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR) spinner in Match 8 of Major League Cricket (MLC) 2023 in Dallas on Tuesday.

Stoinis' quickfire assault turned the game in SFU's favour

The attacking all-rounder racked up an impressive 22 runs off just four balls from Zampa, featuring three sixes and a boundary which effectively shifted the momentum of the game in SFU's favour.

Deciding to bat first after winning the toss, SFU began their innings in grand style. Openers Matthew Wade and Fin Allen quickly established an 88-run partnership to provide a strong foundation for their team.

Stoinis made his entrance after the dismissal of Allen (20) in the eighth over and immediately made an impact with his explosive batting against Zampa in the following over. He first smashed Zampa for a six over long-on followed by a boundary in the extra-cover region.

The 33-year-old then proceeded to take the leg-spinner for cleaners by bludgeoning two consecutive maximums at long-on.

After Stoinis’ onslaught, Zampa’s figure read 0/36 from his first two overs. However, he managed to turn the tide in his final spell, finishing with an admirable 3/41 off four overs. In the 17th and 19th overs, Zampa conceded just five runs from 12 balls and claimed the crucial wickets of Corey Anderson and Shadab Khan.

Meanwhile, Stoinis contributed a high-voltage cameo of 37 runs off 18 balls. His fellow Australian, Matthew Wade, took charge and notched 78 off 41 deliveries, powering the SFU to a massive total of 212/7.

LAKR attempted to chase the substantial target but fell 21 runs short, finishing their innings at 191/5. Despite a promising start, their middle order couldn't maintain the necessary run rate after the loss of their openers.

Andre Russell and captain Sunil Narine put up a valiant fight with a late rally but couldn't overcome the steep target, resulting in LAKR's third consecutive loss in the tournament.
