An unexpected incident during County Championship Division Two’s clash between Derbyshire and Durham left the spectators stunned. Pakistan cricketer, Haider Ali, playing for Derbyshire, suffered a brain-fade moment that led to a dramatic dismissal.

Haider Ali's momentary lapse cost him his wicket

Derbyshire seemed to be in control with a comfortable 179-3 when Ali, looking confident on 38, attempted a powerful sweep against Durham's Captain Scott Borthwick in the 77th over.

However, the shot was ill-timed, causing the ball to strike his pad, leading to a loud appeal from the fielding side. The umpire turned a blind eye to the appeal, but this incident seemed to have disrupted Ali's concentration.

Looking beyond fine leg where he had intended the ball to go, Ali unknowingly walked out of his crease, giving Durham wicketkeeper, Ollie Robinson, the chance he needed.

The alert Durham wicketkeeper, seizing the golden opportunity, gathered the ball and dislodged the bails in a flash, even as Ali, realising his grave error, attempted to scramble back to safety. His last-ditch effort was in vain, as he was adjudged stumped, leaving the field amidst a flurry of astonished faces.

On the other end, Ali’s partner, Brooke Guest, who was at the non-striker’s end, had safely returned to his crease and witnessed the dramatic departure of his partner.

Notably, this is not the first time Ali has been dismissed in such a way. Last month during a T20 Blast 2023 encounter between Warwickshire and Derbyshire, the Pakistan batter lost his wicket due to his unawareness.

Meanwhile, notwithstanding Ali's dismissal, Derbyshire managed to keep their composure concluding the day at an impressive 317-6, largely due to Guest's unbeaten stand of 145. Ben Raine, Matthew Potts & Borthwick grabbed two wickets apiece.

Durham will look to make early inroads on Day 2 to restrict Derbyshire below 400. In order to do so, they will have to get rid of Guest, who has looked solid during his 257-ball stay at the crease.
