England star pacer Gus Atkinson showed why he’s one of the best in the game during the first Test against New Zealand at Hagley Oval, Christchurch, on November 28. The young bowler struck early, dismissing New Zealand's key opener Devon Conway in style.

England Take Early Lead Against NZ

After winning the toss, England chose to bowl first, a decision that paid off quickly. Atkinson, who has been impressive since making his Test debut, proved his worth yet again with the new ball.

The breakthrough came in the second over of New Zealand's innings. With Tom Latham and Devon Conway at the crease, Atkinson bowled a full delivery outside off on the last ball of the over. Conway attempted an aggressive drive but mistimed it completely.

The ball went straight back to Atkinson, who dived low in his follow-through and caught it beautifully before tumbling to the ground. It was a crucial dismissal on a pitch that offered plenty of assistance to the bowlers, as Conway departed cheaply after scoring just 2 runs off 8 balls.

Later in the game, Brydon Carse joined the action, dismissing New Zealand's captain Tom Latham for 47 runs off 54 balls. With both openers back in the pavilion, New Zealand found themselves under pressure.

At the time of writing this article, the Kiwis are at 114 for 2 in 26.3 overs, with Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra steadying the ship at 28* and 33*, respectively.
