David Warner celebrated his landmark 100th T20I for Australia with a belligerent 70-run knock and a sensational boundary catch against West Indies. His batting and fielding brilliance helped his side overcome the visitors by 11 runs in a high-scoring thriller at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

David Warner steals a stunner at boundary

Stationed at deep point boundary by captain Mitchell Marsh, David Warner holed on to a full-blooded thwack onto his off side from Johnson Charles. The catch curtailed Charles’ raging run-chase effort and subsequently hampered West Indies’ aggressive charge.

Warner’s fielding brilliance also handed teammate Adam Zampa the first of his three wickets from the evening, as West Indies lost its opening victim in the ninth over at 89.

Earlier in the match, David Warner slogged his way to a 70-run assault on West Indies bowlers from just 36 balls. The legendary opener belted 12 boundaries and a six in the process, and took a special liking to the visitor’s new-ball paceman and all-rounder Jason Holder. For his all-round excellence with the bat and on the field, the seasoned warhorse was adjudged as ‘Player of the Match’.

Remarkably, the contest marked the 100th T20I outing of Warner’s expansive international career, thus becoming the first Australian cricketer and only the third in history after Virat Kohli and Ross Taylor to play over 100 matches in each of the three formats of the game.

The 37-year-old, who recently made his exit from Tests and ODIs for Australia, will continue his T20I quest at least until this year’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the USA.
