On Thursday, New Zealand got an extraordinary start to their UAE tour, defeating the home side by 19 runs in the first T20I of the ongoing three-match series. Batting first, New Zealand posted a respectable 155-run total on the board and defended it successfully, courtesy of a spectacular five-wicket haul from Tim Southee. However, an incident that grabbed a million eyeballs was a stunning fielding effort from experienced all-rounder Mitchell Santner, who plucked a flying catch off his own bowling to dismiss UAE's Asif Khan.

The incident happened in the seventh over when UAE were cruising towards the 156-run target, well-placed at 62 for two in just 6.5 overs. After starting his second over with two dot balls, Santner conceded consecutive singles in his next three deliveries before getting rid of Asif Khan to conclude the over.

The wily left-arm spinner bowled an arm ball, which Khan mistimed while attempting for a back-foot nudge. Despite being in the air, the ball was way too far from Santner's reach. However, he showcased commendable athleticism and took a giant leap towards his right to grab a one-handed stunner.

Santner's commendable effort earned massive accolades as it paved the way for the Kiwis to trigger a collapse and run through the hosts' batting order. As a result, UAE were eventually bundled out for a paltry 136, incurring a 19-run defeat in the series opener. The second T20I between the two teams will be played in Dubai tonight.
