In an interesting incident, England's premier seam-bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes rolled his arms for a few balls of off-spin in the ongoing Test match against Sri Lanka at Kennington Oval. It happened on day 2 of the dead-rubber when Sri Lanka were batting after restricting England to 325 runs in their first innings.

After Olly Stone's bullet throw resulted in Dimuth Karunaratne's runout dismissal, the umpires had a brief chat about the playing conditions with the light meter in their hands. As the light was less than permitted, the officials asked England's stand-in skipper, Ollie Pope, to resort to spin bowling.

Generally, when there is low light, the batters face difficulty facing the fast bowlers due to their pace. Therefore, the umpires urge the fielding side to use its spinners to ensure fairness and uphold the spirit of the game.

However, as the light dimmed midway through Chris Woakes' spell, the fast bowler switched to spin bowling to complete his over. He approached the popping crease like a spin bowling pro and rolled his fingers over the seam to get genuine turn off his first ball. However, as he kept the ball short, Kusal Mendis rocked back to play a well-timed pull shot for a single.

Woakes didn't shy away from experimenting with his finger spin, trying to deceive the well-set Pathum Nissanka with a carrom ball. However, he ended up bowling it wide outside the off stump, with the batter leaving the ball comfortably.

Woakes tried his best to outfox the Lankan batters despite being a pacer, applying all his spin-bowling variations inside four deliveries. His desperate attempt made Joe Root laugh as the legendary batter admired his variations with a giggle.

Rampant England reduce Sri Lanka to five down in no time

After Ollie Pope's scintillating ton propelled England to 325 in their first innings, the hosts claimed the driving seat by dismissing half of the visiting team in quick succession. Olly Stone emerged as the wrecker-in-chief for England, scalping two crucial wickets besides running Karunaratne out in the match.
