In a gripping moment during the 9th over of the World Cup 2023 Semi Final match between India and New Zealand at Wankhede Stadium, the cricket world held its breath as Virat Kohli faced a tense appeal. Having won the toss, India chose to bat, and as captain Rohit Sharma neared his fifty, he was dismissed by Tim Southee. This brought Virat Kohli to the crease with Shubman Gill.

The pivotal moment occurred with Southee's first delivery to Kohli. An appeal followed, leaving Kohli visibly shocked. In the stands, Anushka Sharma, Kohli's wife, mirrored the sentiment, expressing her concern for her husband's continued presence on the field. The tension escalated as New Zealand took a review on the decision.

The replay revealed Kohli being hit on the pads, initially not given by the umpire. The ball had nipped in, possibly influenced by the height. The crowd at Wankhede erupted as a loud appeal was turned down. Southee's delivery pitched on a length around off, nipping back, deceiving Kohli's attempted defense, and clipping his back leg. The ball raced away to the third man fence for four.

As the New Zealand captain, Kane Williamson, consulted with Southee and Latham, a decision was made to review. The UltraEdge showed a spike close to the bat, but the original decision was upheld. Kohli survived the review, earning a crucial boundary.

At the time of writing, India at 103 for 1 in 13 overs.
