The St. Lucia Kings and the Trinbago Knight Riders locked horns in the 26th match of the CPL 2024 at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad. The Kings displayed a strong show with both the bat and the ball and earned a convincing win by 80 runs to maintain their spot at the top of the points table.

Du Plessis and Charles powered the Kings to a formidable total

Kieron Pollard, the Knight Riders skipper, won the toss and put the Kings to bat. The two openers of the St. Lucia Kings, Faf du Plessis and Johnson Charles, gave their team a dashing start with a 145-run partnership in just 12.4 overs.

After the opening partnership was broken, only Tim Seifert played a resilient knock of 30 runs from 17 balls, while the other batters failed to make any major contribution. Kieron Pollard chipped in with a few wickets, and hence, the Kings were restricted to 218/6 in their 20 overs, which at one stage looked like it would go well past the 230 mark.

218 looked like a challenging but achievable total on a good batting track, especially with the Knights' batting line-up. However, barring Jason Roy, none of the other batters showed resilience, and hence, they kept falling short of the required scoring rate.

Rusell looked dangerous but could not go big

Andre Russell walked into bat at the fall of Kieron Pollard in the seventh over of the innings. Russell's reputation in these situations precedes him, and TKR hoped to see his magic again. He started in his trademark style with two massive maximums and looked set to change the complexion of the match. However, the Afghan magician Noor Ahmad soon accounted for him and further dimmed the Knights' hopes.

On the fifth delivery of the eighth over, Ahmad bowled a back of a good length delivery that spun slightly away from Russell after pitching. The batter set himself up on the back foot and tries to heave it away over square leg. But he missed the bounce of the ball, and it clattered into the stumps, ending Russell's stay in the middle.

After Russell's dismissal, Chris Jordan (27 off 24) and Jayden Seales (16 off 10) fought a bit for the Knights, but they never seemed to be in the game. Eventually, the Knights were bundled out for 138 in the 18th over, and they lost the match by 80 runs.
