South African captain Aiden Markram fumbled in his reverse-sweep attempt against Indian spinner Washington Sundar in the third ODI of their three-match series in Paarl. Markram, batting at number four, led Proteas’ brief run-chase recovery with a fighting 65-run partnership with opener Tony de Zorzi for the third wicket.

Just as the South African skipper had settled himself at the crease, the Indian spinner curtailed his threatening resistance to worsen hosts’ troubles in the series-decider.

Aiden Markram’s reverse-sweep goes wrong

Chasing 297 to seal the three-match series, South African captain Aiden Markram scored 36 runs from 41 balls after arriving to the crease at 76-2. The cricketer cautiously tackled India’s pace uprising and tight spin bowling until he was entrapped by off-spinner Washington Sundar.

In a bid to put away Sundar for a boundary, Markram pulled out his reverse-sweep, only to end up lobbing the ball towards an agile Indian wicketkeeper and his opposite number KL Rahul.

His dismissal signaled South Africa’s middle-order collapse, as they slumped from 141-2 to 174-5 in the space of just seven overs.

Earlier in the game, Team India amassed 296-8 off the back of Sanju Samson’s maiden international century. Visiting batter Tilak Varma also tallied his first ODI half-century, and they were assisted by Rinku Singh’s thunderous cameo in the death overs.
