The 46th match of IPL 2025 between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Delhi Capitals produced another run-out debate when Rajat Patidar was dismissed in a mix-up with Virat Kohli. This marked a significant milestone - the 22nd time in Kohli's IPL career that his batting partner has been run out while they were batting together.

This incident prompts an interesting statistical investigation: which IPL batsmen have been involved in the most partner run-outs throughout the tournament's history?

Whose Partners Live Most Dangerously?

We analyzed comprehensive data covering all IPL seasons from 2008-2024, counting instances where a batter's partner was run out regardless of whether they were batting or at the non-striker's end at the time. Here are the five players whose partners have been run out most frequently:

  1. Dinesh Karthik (28 partner run-outs): The veteran wicketkeeper-batsman tops this unwanted list with 28 of his partners being run out during his IPL career. These dismissals are evenly split with 14 occurring when he was batting and 14 when he was at the non-striker's end.
  2. Rohit Sharma (27 partner run-outs): The Mumbai Indians ex-captain has seen 27 of his batting partners run out over the years. Interestingly, more dismissals (16) happened when Rohit was the non-striker compared to when he was batting (11).
  3. MS Dhoni (26 partner run-outs): Cricket's renowned finisher has been involved in 26 partner run-outs, with significantly more (18) occurring when he was the batter calling the runs. This pattern possibly reflects his aggressive running style, especially during tense chases.
  4. Virat Kohli (22 partner run-outs): With today's dismissal of Patidar, Kohli has now been involved in 22 partner run-outs during his IPL career. Fourteen of these occurred when he was batting and calling the runs, with eight happening when he was at the non-striker's end.
  5. Robin Uthappa (21 partner run-outs): The stylish right-hander has seen 21 of his partners dismissed in run-outs over his IPL career. Twelve of these happened when he was the non-striker, while nine occurred when he was batting.

Rohit Sharma follows closely with 27 partner run-outs. The Mumbai Indians captain has seen more partners dismissed when he was the non-striker (16) compared to when he was batting (11).

MS Dhoni occupies the third position with 26 partner run-outs. Interestingly, significantly more of his partners (18) were run out when he was the batter calling the runs, possibly reflecting his aggressive running style when batting.

Robin Uthappa sits fourth with 21 partner dismissals, just ahead of Kohli who now has 21 partner run-outs following the Patidar incident.

Kohli: Better Than His Ranking Suggests

What's particularly revealing about Kohli's statistics is his run-out percentage. Despite ranking fifth on the all-time list for total partner run-outs, his percentage of 0.169% is significantly lower than the others in the top five. In fact, among the 186 players who've been involved in at least 500 deliveries, Kohli ranks much lower in terms of frequency.
