The Northern Districts team retired two of their batters in a single innings against Otago Volts in match number 10 of the 2025-26 Super Smash season. The tactical move by the Northern Districts marked the first-ever instance of a team retiring two batters in a single innings in T20 history.

Two batters were also retired out back in June 2022 during a Vitality T20 Blast game, however, players Carlos Brathwaite and Samit Patel were retired out in different innings of a rain-curtailed eight-over shootout between Birmingham Bears and Nottinghamshire in Birmingham.

Northern Districts escape with a tie after retiring a veteran and a rookie

The Northern Districts team was forced to retire two of their slow-going batters against Otago Volts in match 10 of the 2025-26 Super Smash season. The incidents occurred at the start of the 17th and 18th overs of the Districts innings when they retired senior man Jeet Raval and young Xavier Bell respectively.

At one stage, the Northern Districts required 58 runs from their remaining four overs before retiring out a struggling Jeet Raval, who was batting at 23* from 28 balls at the time. He eventually got replaced by captain Ben Pomare. Meanwhile, Xavier Bell (9 off 13) got replaced by hard-hitting all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijn the following over.

As it turned out, both Pomare and Kuggeleijn started off their respective cameos with huge sixes to give a late push to Northern Districts in their dwindling innings. Pomare clubbed a handy 10-ball 20, while Kuggeleijn remained unbeaten at 34* from 12 balls with three fours and two sixes as Northern Districts managed to pull off a thrilling tie against Otago Volts after an 18-run final over.

With the nail-biting outcome, both teams shared points among them as there is no Super Over in place in league fixtures of the Super Smash.
