Australia are batting India out of the match in the fourth Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024. The match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground is currently in a situation from where it will require a brilliant batting effort by the visitors to make a comeback in the game.

The match was in the balance at the end of Day 1. Australia had 311 runs on the board and lost six wickets. From that position the game could have gone either way on Day 2. India would have hoped to bundle out the home team as quickly as possible and then take an advantage in the game by displaying a resolute batting effort. However, that did not happen courtesy Steve Smith.

The modern Australian great played a brilliant knock. He scored a century and reached the landmark of 34 Test centuries. As Smith reached the landmark he went past Sir Alastair Cook and Kane Williamson in the list of most Test Hundred. He also equalled Brian Charles Lara, Sunil Gavaskar, Younis Khan and Mahela Jayawardene in this list, who too had 34 Test hundreds in their careers.

The list for Hundreds in Test cricket is topped by Sachin Tendulkar, who 51 tons under his belt. While Smith is quite a distance away to reach that landmark, there is an Indian legend who would be in his hit list soon. Rahul Dravid has 36 Test centuries o his name and Smith just needs two more Test hundreds to equal him and three to go past him. Notably, the highest number for Test centuries by an active player belongs to Joe Root, who too has 36 Tons to his name.
