Indian Test skipper, Shubman Gill has hit another massive milestone, becoming only the third Indian captain to score 500 or more runs in a single Test series. And he is in rarefied air, rubbing shoulders with Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli.

Shubman Gill Joined Elite Club With 500 Runs As Captain In England Test Series

On Saturday at Edgbaston against England, Shubman Gill brought up the landmark in style. With a flick and a thump, he moved to 76 and stormed into the elite club. Kohli had set the benchmark with 593 runs in England during the 2018 tour but with Gill already past 500 and three more Tests left in the series, the young gun has every chance to write his name at the very top.

In the first innings, Gill had already made jaws drop with his swashbuckling 269—the highest score by an Indian Test captain, overtaking Kohli. Now in the second dig, he picked up right where he left off. After India lost Karun Nair early, Gill came in and played second fiddle to KL Rahul, who notched up a calm fifty.

Once Rahul departed, it was Rishabh Pant's turn to fire up the fireworks. The southpaw took charge and alongside Gill, put on a solid 110-run stand. While Pant went for his shots, Gill was all poise and power, timing his assault to perfection. After Lunch, he upped the ante, hammering short balls and lofting them into the stands.

500 Runs And Counting

The moment Gill hammered Shoaib Bashir for a six while batting on 70, he became the second Indian Test captain after Kohli to score 500+ runs in a series in England.

Notably, he also went past Kohli’s tally of 449 runs from his debut series as captain back in 2014-15. Gill now holds the record for the most runs by an Indian Test captain in their debut series.

Chasing Gavaskar's Golden Numbers

Only two men now stand ahead of him: Virat Kohli (593) and Sunil Gavaskar (732). Gavaskar achieved his tally of 732 in a home series against the West Indies in 1978-79. He also scored 500 runs as captain against England in 1981-82.

But Gill, in his prime and with the form he is in, looks like a man on a mission. With the scoreboard reading 281/4 and Gill unbeaten on 90 at the time of writing, another hundred might just be around the corner. And with it, perhaps another broken record.

From being touted as India’s next big thing to now bossing England in their own backyard, Shubman Gill is proving that he is not just living up to the hype, he is building a legacy of his own.
