India is set to take on Australia in the 3-match ODI series, starting on Sunday. The Men in Blue have a new ODI leader in the form of Shubman Gill, as the youngster has replaced Rohit Sharma as the leader of the Indian team. In the upcoming ODIs, captain Gill has a great chance to break several records, and one of them involves going past Pakistan’s Babar Azam.

Gill eyes huge record as India captain set to displace Babar

The three-match series provides Gill a huge chance to go past some of the best ODI batters of the modern era. If Gill manages to score 225 runs in the three ODIs, then the skipper will become the second fastest to 3,000 runs in this format. Currently, Gill has 2775 runs in 55 innings, and he could achieve a huge milestone come the end of the series.

South African legend, Hashim Amla, sits at the top of the pile, as he churned out 3,000 runs in just 57 innings. Interestingly, if Gill achieves the feat in the upcoming series, he will sit at second place, and Babar Azam, who currently occupies the fifth spot, will be removed from the list.

  • Proteas legend, Amla, is at the number one position, and the second spot is occupied by West Indian batter, Shai Hope. Three Pakistan players sit at the third, fourth, and fifth spots, but if Gill manages to breach the record, then Babar will be removed from the list.
  • No other Indian is in the list, with Shikhar Dhawan scoring 3000 ODI runs in 72 innings, and Virat Kohli in 75.

Gill's stellar ODI career so far

In a relatively short ODI career of 55 games, the new Indian captain has made a name for himself and has already won a 50-overs title with India (Champions Trophy). Moreover, his numbers in the format is mind-boggling as he nears the 3000 run-mark.

He has already racked up 2775 runs, with an average of 59.04, including 8 centuries. The batter will have a chance to further enhance his numbers in the upcoming series.
