Shane Watson shatters IML T20 record
Australia Masters captain and opening batter Shane Watson notched up a 48-ball century against West Indies Masters at the DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai on Monday, February 24. The broad-shouldered cricketer shared 34 runs with opening partner Ben Dunk at the top of the order, before blazing Australia past the 150-run mark alongside Callum Ferguson and Daniel Christian (32 off 15).
Watson’s 48-ball century now marks the first-ever hundred in the history of the relatively-new International Masters League T20 (IML T20) competition.
Notably, Shane Watson was dropped by West Indies Masters wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin and Chris Gayle at first slip earlier in the innings when the Australian opener was batting at just 5* at the time.
Prior to the match, West Indies captain Brian Lara had won the toss and opted to bat first. Shane Watson responded with a flurry of boundaries as his firebrand approach raced Australia to 54-1 at the end of the opening powerplay.
Racing to his half-century from just 28 balls, the 43-year-old Australian cricketer reached from 50 to 100 in just 20 deliveries to muscle a 48-ball ton. The legendary Australian all-rounder was eventually dismissed by West Indies spinner Ashley Nurse after reaching 107 runs from 52 balls. His innings also catapulted the Australian Masters past 200 runs with nearly two overs to spare in the innings.
