New Zealand sees departure of selector [Source: @BLACKCAPS/X.com]
New Zealand cricket has been hit by another big change. Sam Wells, the selector for the Black Caps men’s team, has decided to step down from his role. His departure comes during a period of transition for New Zealand cricket, following the exit of long-time coach Gary Stead and the Test retirement of former skipper Tim Southee.
Wells played an important role in shaping the Kiwis during his time as selector. New Zealand had some spectacular performances during his tenure, such as a record 3-0 Test series win in India on their home turf, a benchmark that put all other cricketing circles in the spotlight.
He also oversaw the team’s journey to the final of the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year.
Sam Wells Resigns As Selector After 2 Successful Years
In an official announcement, New Zealand Cricket confirmed that Sam Wells has decided to step down as the men’s team’s selector just 2 years after he first took the role. Last year, Wells was named a partner in a Dunedin law firm named Gallaway Cook Allan.
Since then, he has been unable to juggle two jobs and decided to step down from his role in New Zealand cricket. Despite notable achievements under his tenure, the 41-year-old has decided it’s time to move on.
“Serving as selection manager for the BLACKCAPS over the past two years has been a tremendous privilege. While I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time in the role, I’ve made the difficult decision to step down in order to prioritise my personal and professional commitments outside of cricket. I remain a proud supporter of the BLACKCAPS and will continue to cheer the team on as they build toward future success," Wells said in a statement.
With Wells gone, New Zealand Cricket now faces the task of finding a new selector who can continue to shape the future of the team.
New Zealand To Host Australia Next
Meanwhile, after a successful 2-0 win in the Test series against Zimbabwe, New Zealand will enjoy a good break of 5-6 weeks before the home season begins. Their next series is scheduled in October, as the Black Caps will welcome Australia for a 3-game T20I series. From then, they’ll host England in a 3-game T20I and ODI series, followed by another home series against the West Indies.
