Keshav Maharaj [X.Com]
South African tailender Keshav Maharaj failed to rescue his side in their dismal batting effort against India in the first ODI of their 3-match series. Batting at number nine and arriving to the crease following the cheap dismissal of David Miller at 58-7, Maharaj added 15 runs for the eighth wicket with fellow lower-order batter Andile Phehlukwayo before he mistimed one off Indian speedster Avesh Khan.
His departure further exacerbated South Africa’s dire batting situation, plunging them deeper into trouble at 73-8 in just 16.1 overs.
Keshav Maharaj mistimes one off Avesh Khan
South African tailender Keshav Maharaj hit a boundary off Avesh Khan early in his innings before the Indian speedster managed to extract revenge in his following over. Maharaj attempted to flay Khan over the off-side, only to get holed out by Ruturaj Gaikwad stationed at short cover.
His irresponsible shot worsened South Africa’s batting crisis at 73-8, thus forcing debutant Nandre Burger much earlier into the crease.
Maharaj’s cheap dismissal also handed Avesh Khan his fourth successive wicket of the innings, after new-ball speedster Arshdeep Singh had blown away the entirety of South Africa’s top-order with his opening spell inside the powerplay.
The match, being played at the iconic Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, marks the opening tie of the three-match series between India and hosts South Africa. The fixtures were preceded by a three-match T20I rubber, which levelled at 1-1 after the opening affair was washed out owing to rains.
