In a significant development, Zimbabwe won the toss and opted to bowl in the first ODI of the two-match series against Sri Lanka at Harare Sports Club. However, the hosts suffered a massive setback, with their regular captain Craig Ervine being ruled out, not only from the first ODI but also from the entire series.
Why Has Craig Ervine Been Sidelined From ZIM vs SL 1st ODI?
At toss, stand-in captain Sean Williams revealed that Craig Ervine wouldn't participate in the Sri Lanka ODIs, with a calf injury sidelining him from the series. Williams stated that Ervine has been ruled out due to a grade two tear in one calf and grade one in the other.
Ervine's injury is a massive blow to Zimbabwe, as he has been their key batter in ODI cricket. In 124 ODIs, the southpaw has amassed 3600 runs at an average of 33 and a strike rate of 76.7. He has struck 23 fifties and four centuries, showcasing his batting prowess in the format.
Meanwhile, the return of Brendan Taylor is one of the major highlights of Zimbabwe's team selection. Brian Bennett and Ben Curran will bat as openers, while Taylor will spearhead the middle order alongside Wesley Madhevere, Sikandar Raza, Tony Munyonga and skipper Sean Williams.
Talking about Zimbabwe's bowling department, Brad Evans brings pace to the table, while the accuracy of Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani could pose serious threat to the Sri Lankans. Trevor Gwandu, who was impressive against South Africa, is also expected to play a crucial role with the ball in this match.
