In what was a face-off between the heavyweights Mumbai Indians beat Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 4 wickets in Match 7 of the ongoing Women's Premier League (WPL) at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
It was yet another last-over thriller in what looked like a game for the ages at electrifying RCB’s fortress. Mumbai Indians got their second win of the campaign. Meanwhile, the defending champions’ 5-match winning streak comes to an end.
Here's how the RCB-W vs MI-W panned out in Bengaluru:
Mandhana perishes after a strong start
After inserting to bat first, Smriti Mandhana got RCB off to a great start as the skipper came out all guns blazing, eyeing to get the best out of the powerplay, . The southpaw launched an early attack with four boundaries and a six, before playing one up in the air as she departed after a brisk 26 off 13.
Mumbai Indians got the much needed opening and managed to keep RCB quiet for the remainder of the powerplay. They went on to take three more wickets, leaving RCB 74 for 4 at the half-way mark.
Ellyse Perry Came To The Rescue, Again!
With 4 down at the half-way mark, RCB were far away from being in control. Ellyse Perry joined hands with Richa Ghosh and started the rebuilding job. The pair added a crucial 50 runs for the fifth wicket before Amanjot Kaur cleaned up Richa before she could do any further damage.
However, Perry kept going at the other end and notched her half-century in 30 balls. With less than four overs to go, Perry opened her hands and tore Mumbai’s bowling apart. It was yet another masterclass from the veteran as she hauled RCB back in the game, this time with a flawless 81 off 43.
With the ball, Mumbai had a decent day in the office with Amanjot being the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets. Meanwhile, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Hayley Matthews went a bit expensive as RCB posted 167 in their 20 overs.
RCB Recovers After Nat Sciver-Brunt’s Early Madness
In reply, Mumbai Indians had a terrific start to their chase as they accumulated 66 runs inside the first six overs itself. Despite losing Yastika Bhatia early, Mumbai came out firing, amassing what happened to be their highest powerplay score in WPL. Nat Sciver-Brunt, who has been in the best of form, contributed majorly with 41 off 18.
RCB, trying to put a break on the run-flow, managed to dismiss Hayley Matthews in the last ball of the powerplay. With required rate coming down to 7, Smriti Mandhana brough Kim Garth back into the attack and seamer didn't disappoint as she got the big wicket of Sciver-Brunt, which was followed by a wicket-maiden from Georgia Wareham and RCB got themselves back into the contest.
Amanjot Kaur held her nerve to take MI home
As the pressure was mounting, Mumbai badly needed a partnership after the half-way mark. Harmanpreet Kaur rose to the occasion and scored a much needed half-century. She was well accompanied by Amanjot Kaur at the other end and the pair added an important 62 runs for the fifth wicket to bring MI back in control.
Just when it looked MI cruising towards the victory, Wareham came back into the attack and got two wickets in back to back balls, including one of the dangerous looking Harmanpreet and RCB got back in the hunt.
However, with 22 needed off 12, Amanjot hit two important sixes to bring the equation down to run-ball. Eventually, Kamalini G hit one through the cover to take MI over the line with 4 wickets in hand.
RCB, who fought hard, had to leave with a huge heartbreak at the end. Wareham was easily the best bowler for the home side as she took 3 for 21 in her 4.
