England and Australia resume battle in an engrossing Ashes series at Old Trafford in Manchester, which will play host to the fourth Test of the series starting Wednesday, July 19. The visitors hold a crucial 2-1 lead going into the encounter, having secured narrow victories in the first two Tests at Edgbaston and Lord's respectively.

However, the momentum will be on the side of the home side ahead of the fourth Test as they claimed victory in the third match in Leeds. Furthermore, England head into the final two Tests of the series needing two wins to reclaim the Ashes, with Australia only needing to remain unbeaten in one of the two matches to retain the urn.

Will rain play a spoilsport at Old Trafford?

As such, players, coaches, and fans alike will have one eye on the weather in Manchester between July 19 and July 24 so that a full and fair game of cricket can be played.

The threat of rain is expected to hang over all five days of the Test without playing spoilsport with the action. The highest chance of rain is expected to be on Day 1, which carries a 76% chance of showers in the morning. The chance of rain decreases in the following days, dropping to around 40% on day 2 before holding steady at 60% on Days 3, 4, and 5.

Accompanied by a slight yet steady wind of about 10-15 km/h, the overcast conditions could favour the seam bowlers. With rain most likely on Day 1, the side that wins the toss might well bowl first, even though sides batting first at the venue have won 32 of 84 matches here, while the sides bowling first have amassed 16 wins.

Old Trafford’s reputation for unpredictable weather is not unfounded, as it is the only ground in England where a Test match has been abandoned without a ball being bowled.

In fact, before Cardiff hosted its first Test match in July 2009, Old Trafford was regarded as the wettest Test ground in the country. However, both cases of matches being abandoned here happened in 1890 and 1938, so it is unlikely that such a fate will befall this game.
