Pakistan kicked off their Tri-Nation series in the UAE with a strong win over Afghanistan in Sharjah on Friday, August 29. The match not only gave Pakistan their first victory of the tournament but also brought a personal milestone for ace pacer Shaheen Afridi.
Afridi, who is 25 years old, surpassed India star pacer Jasprit Bumrah in the list of bowlers with the most wickets in T20 cricket. He picked up two wickets during the game, removing Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran for 9 runs early in the innings and later dismissing Mujeeb Ur Rahman for 4 runs.

These two wickets pushed Afridi’s career tally to 314 wickets in 225 matches, moving him ahead of Bumrah. Among Pakistan players, Afridi now sits at number nine on the all-time list and could soon overtake Hasan Ali, as he needs only two more wickets to go past him.

Shaheen Afridi | 225 | 314 |
Jasprit Bumrah | 245 | 313 |
Talking about the match, the Men in Green posted a strong total after winning the toss and deciding to bat first. Their innings, however, wasn’t smooth. Despite a quick start from the openers, Pakistan stumbled to 83/4.
However, the captain, Salman Ali Agha, rose to the occasion. He scored a well-made fifty and along with Mohammad Nawaz, built a 50-run partnership that pulled Pakistan back on track. Thanks to their efforts, Pakistan ended their innings at 183 runs.
Afghanistan began their chase with promise, reaching 92/2 and looking well-placed to push for victory. But their batting completely collapsed in dramatic fashion. In just 17 balls, they lost five wickets for only four runs, slipping to 97/7.
Bowlers Haris Rauf and Sufiyan Muqeem were key in this collapse, taking two wickets each during that spell. Afghanistan never recovered and eventually lost the match by 39 runs.
