England, under first-time ODI captain Moeen Ali, fell to a 72-run larruping at the SCG against Australia, and conceded their three-match series to the hosts with a game to spare.

Ali himself failed to make much impact in the match, apart from the lone wicket he took during his short four-over spell. Later, the all-rounder fell for a four-ball 10 in the run-chase, and became the first of four victims of Adam Zampa in the evening.

After the match, the star Englishman said that the team lost its plot in the middle overs, considering the visitors succumbed from 156-3 at one stage to 208 all out, all in a space of a dreadful hour of batsmanship.

Moeen Ali rues batting collapse in second ODI

Despite the defeat, Moeen Ali praised his bowlers for restricting the Australian batters upfront. He claimed that even though the wicket got better to bat in the second innings, his team failed to capitalise on the conditions in their run-chase.

Ali added that England will now be looking to end the series with a win in their next match, and bring a fitting end to a tour which saw them lifting the 2022 T20 World Cup title. He said:

“We were in a good position with the bat but lost three quick wickets in the middle and obviously at the start of the things. At the end we bowled well. The wicket got better to bat but we lost too many wickets in clumps.

"They bowled well when we were cruising. Just hoping to finish off the series with a win. We have had a very good time in Australia having won the World Cup, so will be good to register a win in this ODI series.”
