One of Australia's upcoming big-hitting all-round opening batsmen, Mitchell Owen, has been in fine form since the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-2025 season, playing for the Hobart Hurricanes. The Tasmanian player, in the recent Australian One Day Cup game, smashed the third-fastest half-century in the tournament's history.
Mitchell Owen Shatters Records In Australian One-Day
Mitchell Owen has been in the headlines since smashing the century in the final of the Big Bash League 2024-2025, playing for the Hobart Hurricanes, where he took his side to their maiden title. He then rose into the Australian team earlier this year, making a T20I debut, and since then, has been one of their mainstays.
In the recent game between Tasmania and Victoria at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane, Owen did something that is very characteristic of him. Tasmania, while batting first, saw Owen open the innings with Caleb Jewell.
However, things went totally in Mitchell's favour, as he consumed just 20 deliveries for his blistering half-century, smashing five boundaries and four maximums on his way to a strike rate of 252.38. Tasmania then lost both Jewell and the number three batter, Jake Weatherald, for ducks.
Despite the lack of runs from the other batsmen, Owen single-handedly scored 53 off 21 deliveries before getting dismissed by Cameron McClure. His half-century came right before any other Tasmanian batter was able to score a run.
By doing this, he has now become the third-quickest player to score a half-century in the Australian domestic One Day Cup, behind only Jake Fraser-McGurk and Glenn Maxwell.
