Mankad attempted by Adam Zampa turned down in Big Bash League

Melbourne Stars' skipper Adam Zampa during the derby in the Big Bash League tried 'mankading' Melbourne Renegades' Tom Rogers for backing up too far during his delivery. The controversy erupted after the decision was sent upstairs with the umpire signalling not out.

The incident occurred when the leg-spinner was about to deliver the fifth ball of the final over in the first innings with Rogers moving too far ahead. Zampa instantly appealed and it was then left to the third umpire to decide the fate of Rogers, who magnificently looked at all the angles to adjudge the batter safe.

The decision caused the entire Melbourne Cricket Ground to fill with boos as the crowd weren't entirely satisfied with the decision. The commentators on air mentioned that the arm going over the vertical is the reason why it was not given out.

The entire ruling was later confirmed by the custodians of laws of cricket, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) on Twitter who mentioned that,

"The non-striker can be run out if he/she is out of his/her ground up until the moment the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball. That means when the arm gets to its highest point.

"The bowler is *not* entitled to go all the way around in the bowling action and then run the non-striker out."

However, after the game Stars' coach David Hussey revealed Zampa spoke to him that he would have withdrawn the appeal had they given it out.

In the end, the Renegades went home with a victory by a margin of 33 runs.
