India’s middle-order stalwart KL Rahul top scored for his side with a cautious 66 against Australia in the final of the 2023 World Cup. The cricketer formed crucial partnerships with Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav before succumbing to Mitchell Starc’s pace in the backend of the innings.

Remarkably, the 31-year-old also contributed with the gloves later in the game by plucking a swinging Jasprit Bumrah delivery to pack Mitchell Marsh cheaply in the Australian run-chase. Through the course of his wicketkeeping effort, Rahul soared past the likes of former Indian cricketers MS Dhoni and Rahul Dravid for a huge Indian World Cup record.

KL Rahul, who has been keeping wickets for Team India throughout the 2023 World Cup, has so far bagged 17 dismissals (16 catches and 1 stumping) in this year’s competition. In doing so, he went past his current coach and former Indian cricketer Rahul Dravid as well as former teammate MS Dhoni in affecting most dismissals in a single World Cup edition.

Dravid previously claimed 16 dismissals at the 2003 World Cup in South Africa, while MS Dhoni collected 15 dismissals during India’s triumphant World Cup run of 2011.

KL Rahul is also currently placed second on the list of wicketkeepers with most dismissals in the 2023 World Cup. The Indian veteran finds himself three dismissals behind South African stumper Quinton de Kock (20 dismissals from 10 matches).

Earlier in the match, Rahul’s calculated 66 drove India to a below-part 240 in their innings from 50 overs. His captain Rohit Sharma bludgeoned an attacking 31-ball 47 within the powerplay while fellow senior batter Virat Kohli notched up his ninth fifty-plus score of the competition.
