KL Rahul Tops Elite Indian List With Lord's Test Heroics
The incident occurred during the 67th over of India's first innings as Rahul breached the three-figure mark and celebrated the milestone in style. Rahul, who played a pivotal role in stabilising the Indian innings amid cheap dismissals of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Karun Nair and Shubman Gill, brought up his century by taking a single in Jofra Archer's first over in the post-lunch session.
It's worth mentioning that it is Rahul's second Test hundred at Lord's Cricket Ground. He got his maiden entry into the prestigious honours board with a glorious century on India's 2021 tour of England.
Thus, he became India's first-ever opener to score two Test tons at the home of cricket. Overall, he is only the second Indian after Dilip Vengsarkar to register more than one Test hundreds at the iconic venue.
Indian openers with most Test centuries at Lord's
- KL Rahul - 2
- Vinoo Mankad - 1
- Ravi Shastri - 1
Thus, KL Rahul, Vinoo Mankad and Ravi Shastri are the only Indian openers with Test tons at Lord's. While Vengsarkar has three tons, legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli don't have a Test century at the Mecca of cricket.
However, soon after completing his century, Rahul was dismissed by English spinner Shoaib Bashir. Nitish Reddy joined Ravindra Jadeja in the middle following his departure. As of writing, India were 254 for five, with Jadeja and Reddy batting on 4* and 0*, respectively.
