On Saturday, South Africa defeated India by 30 runs in the first Test match of the two-match series at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. After India’s final wicket fell, Mohammed Siraj getting out for a duck, India pacer Jasprit Bumrah walked over to South Africa captain Temba Bavuma and was seen giving him a friendly side hug.
According to reports, Bumrah also apologised for a comment he had made earlier in the match.
Bumrah comforts Bavuma after controversial on-field comment
The incident being talked about happened on the opening day of the Test. During the 13th over of the SA's first innings, Bumrah bowled a delivery that hit Bavuma on the pads. India appealed for LBW, but the umpire gave it “not out.”
As the Indian players gathered to decide whether they should take the DRS review, Bumrah made a light-hearted remark about Bavuma’s height, reportedly using the Hindi word “bauna,” which means “short” or “dwarf.” The comment made Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant laugh, but it also sparked chatter online once the stump mic audio circulated.
Although the remark seemed playful in the moment, Bumrah later appeared to feel that it may have come across the wrong way. After India lost the match, he was seen approaching Bavuma and saying sorry in a polite, friendly manner. The gesture showed sportsmanship and helped clear the air between the two captains and senior players.
As for the match itself, it was a tough loss for India. While chasing a target of 124 runs in the fourth innings, India were bowled out for just 104. Shubman Gill, who injured his neck on Saturday, couldn’t come out to bat, which made things even harder for the home side.
For South Africa, Simon Harmer was the star with four wickets. Marco Jansen dismissed both Indian openers, while spinner Keshav Maharaj picked up two wickets. Washington Sundar was India’s top scorer in the second innings, but he too fell to Aiden Markram.
With this win, the visitors now lead the series 1–0. The second and final Test will be played at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
