Young India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was in brilliant form during the second Test against West Indies, looking all set to score his third double century in Tests. However, his dream ended in heartbreak when a miscommunication with captain Shubman Gill led to his run-out on Day 2 of the match in Delhi.

Starting the day at 173 runs, Jaiswal looked confident and in control. He played a shot towards mid-off and began running for a single. He had almost reached halfway down the pitch when Gill suddenly called him back. By the time Jaiswal turned around, it was too late, the throw from the fielder hit the stumps, leaving him short of his crease.

Jaiswal was visibly shocked and upset. He hit his forehead in frustration and gestured towards Gill, clearly indicating that he thought the run was on. Gill, looking equally surprised, didn’t say much as Jaiswal stood still for a few moments, seemingly unable to accept what had just happened.

The umpire, Richard Illingworth, declared him out on the field. Some replays later showed the decision was extremely close, and many felt the umpire should have referred it to the third umpire for review. But the damage was already done. A disappointed Jaiswal finally made the long walk back to the pavilion.

After the incident, Jaiswal and Gill were seen having a brief, tense exchange. It was clear that emotions were running high. Jaiswal’s dismissal ended what had been a magnificent innings, 175 runs off 258 balls, including 22 boundaries.

On the previous day, he had dominated the West Indies bowlers, first playing cautiously and then speeding up as the day progressed. At the time of writing this article, India are at 389 for 3, with Gill still at the crease alongside Nitish Kumar Reddy.
