The Lucknow Super Giants overcame the Rajasthan Royals hurdle in match number 26 of the ongoing IPL 2023 season. The KL Rahul-led side held its nerves to clinch a final-over thriller by 10 runs, catapulted themselves to eight points, and snapped Rajasthan Royals three-game winning run.

Opener Kyle Mayers was one of the driving forces of Super Giants’ latest win, as the West Indian import scored an unusual 51 on a difficult pitch at the top of the order for his side.

Kyle Mayers says pitch not ideal for stroke-play

Kyle Mayers registered his third fifty-plus score of the season as he struck a fluent 51 at the top of the order with captain KL Rahul. However, the cricketer consumed 42 deliveries in his innings, thus maintaining a strike-rate of just 121.42, and falling way below his usual standards of the season.

After the match, Mayers expressed his excitement over the win, considering it came against the table-toppers in an away fixture. He also spoke in length about the pitch and how it was not ideal for stroke-play.

“It was a good victory. Any win away from home is good. I think I have been batting well, from international cricket and into this tournament. It (the pitch) was not best for stroke-play and I told myself early to not look for sixes and look for more boundaries. It was a difficult surface for any new batter to come in and start hitting.”

He further stated that he looked to play straight because of the “up-and-down” nature of the bounce on the surface. He said:

“It was not two-paced as much, it was more up-and-down bounce. Variable bounce was the hardest thing. It was about trying to hit the ball as straight as possible and access the off side.”

Kyle Mayers will now turn up for the Lucknow Super Giants in their next game, a home fixture, against defending champions Gujarat Titans on April 22.
