Lucknow Super Giants: 154-7 (Kyle Mayers 51 (42), KL Rahul 39 (32),Ravichandran Ashwin 2-23,Trent Boult 1-16) beat Rajasthan Royals: 144-6 (20)  (Yashasvi Jaiswal 44 (35), Jos Buttler 40 (41), Avesh Khan 3-25, Marcus Stoinis 2-28) by 10 runs.

The Lucknow Super Giants overcame table-toppers Rajasthan Royals in the latter’s fortress in match number 26 of the ongoing IPL 2023 season.

The defeat snapped Royals’ three-game unbeaten run, and catapulted the Super Giants to eight points on the table. Despite the result, Sanju Samson and co. continue to maintain their top position in the standings, with four wins and just two defeats from their six fixtures.

LSG crawl towards 154 after sublime opening stand

Lucknow Super Giants openers KL Rahul and Kyle Mayers formed a sublime 82-run opening stand within the first 11 overs of the innings. The latter of the two listed a crafty 51 to notch up him third half-century of the season.

However, after Rahul’s dismissal, the Super Giants lost their way with Ayush Badoni and Deepak Hooda departing in quick succession. Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran clubbed rapid 20s in the death as the LSG reached 154-7 at the end of their 20 overs.

Rajasthan Royals ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin claimed two wickets off his spell, while new-ball pacer Trent Boult conceded just 16 runs from his four overs with a wicket to his name.

Middle-order collapse undoes Royals opening response

Yashasvi Jaiswal was the first to depart in the Rajasthan Royals’ response, after sharing an 87-run opening stand with partner Jos Buttler. The young left-hander faced 35 balls to score an attacking 44, meanwhile, Buttler consumed 41 deliveries to score a sluggish 40 at the top.

Both openers were removed by Super Giants’ all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, who scored 21 with the bat in the first half of the game. Their dismissals led to a semi batting collapse within the Royals camp, as they slumped to 104-4 from 87-0 in a space of four overs.

Devdutt Padikkal and Riyan Parag took the chase deep, but Avesh Khan’s tight last over prevented the duo from getting the remaining 19 runs. Khan eventually finished with three wickets, including the two snared from the final over of the game as the Super Giants emerged victorious by 10 runs.
