Brief Scores: Punjab Kings: 176-6 (20 overs) [Shikhar Dhawan: 45 (37), Jitesh Sharma: 27 (20); Mohammed Siraj 2/26 (4), Glenn Maxwell 2/29 (3)] lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru: 178-6 (19.2 overs) [Virat Kohli: 77 (49), Dinesh Karthik: 28* (10); Harpreet Brar 2/13 (4), Kagiso Rabada 2/23 (4)] by four wickets.

Virat Kohli orchestrated yet another run-chase masterclass to take RCB home, this time against Punjab Kings in match number six of the IPL 2024 season at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Dhawan’s 45, lower-order brilliance fuels PBKS’ 176

Being asked to bat first, Punjab Kings captain Shikhar Dhawan laid out a concrete foundation at the top with a free-flowing 55-run stand with Prabhsimran Singh (25 off 17) after Jonny Bairstow’s early miscue off Mohammed Siraj.

However, Punjab Kings soon had their sublime start squandered away in a space of two deliveries, when Liam Livingstone and Dhawan had their run-scoring charge halted by Alzarri Joseph and Maxwell respectively.

At 98-4 in 12 overs, Sam Curran and team vice-captain Jitesh Sharma produced rapid 20s while uncapped all-rounder Shashank Singh blasted an eight-ball 21* to take Punjab Kings to a competitive 176-6 at the end of their innings.

Virat Kohli’s 77 catalyst of RCB’s smooth chase

Amidst tumbling top-order wickets, including that of captain Faf du Plessis and Cameron Green by Kagiso Rabada, Virat Kohli kept RCB’s run-chase on course with an imposing 77-run knock off 49 deliveries.

However, even a raging Kohli found it difficult to counter Punjab Kings’ spinner Harpreet Brar (2-13), who claimed the key wickets of Rajat Patidar and Glenn Maxwell during his economical four-over spell.

Kohli and Anuj Rawat’s successive dismissals to Sam Curran and Harshal Patel did signal Kings’ fightback at the death before Dinesh Karthik (28* off 10) and Mahipal Lomror’s (17* off 8) skilful slog-overs fury took RCB home in the final over.
