Lucknow Super Giants – 257/5 in 20 overs [Marcus Stoinis 72 (40), Kyle Mayers 54 (24); Kagiso Rabada 2/52 (4), Liam Livingstone 1/19 (1)] beat Punjab Kings – 201 in 19.5 overs [Atharva Taide 66 (36), Sikandar Raza 36 (22); Yash Thakur 4/37 (3.5), Naveen-ul-Haq 3/30 (4)]

Lucknow Super Giants batters flogged the Punjab Kings for 20 overs, before bowlers completed the demolition job in a one-sided affair in Mohali.

The win by the Super Giants lifted them up to number two on the IPL 2023 points table, while Punjab Kings’ net run-rate took a heavy pounding during the business end of the tournament.

LSG mount 257 with calculated assault

LSG went berserk from ball one, with opener Kyle Mayers punishing every Punjab Kings bowler within the powerplay. The West Indies-based batter blasted a 24-ball 54, before Ayush Badoni, Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran launched calculated assaults in the middle.

Badoni hammered 43 from just 24 deliveries, while Stoinis top-scored in the innings with an explosive 40-ball 72. Pooran joined the party by clubbing a 19-ball 45, a cameo that charged up the Super Giants total to 257-5.

Almost every single Punjab Kings bowler was tactically taken apart, with Kagiso Rabada’s lacklustre figures of 2-52 emerging as the spell of the innings. Arshdeep Singh too conceded 52 runs from his four overs, as the Super Giants charted the second highest team total in IPL history.

Atharva Taide plays lone hand in Punjab Kings response

Punjab Kings comeback man and captain Shikhar Dhawan left his side’s response within the opening over of the innings. The veteran opener was removed by Stoinis, who left field a while later owing to a finger injury.

Atharva Taide at number three formed a fighting 78-run stand with Sikandar Raza, who scored 36 from 22 balls in the run-chase. Taide himself whacked a 36-ball 66 to keep his side in the hunt of an improbable chase for about two-thirds of their innings.

Kings’ Englishmen Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran scored rapid 20s, before Super Giants’ Yash Thakur mopped up the hosts tail with a four-fer. Afghanistan star Naveen-ul-Haq also snared three wickets in a high-scoring game, to dust out the Punjab Kings for just 201.
