The 22nd match of the IPL 2023 saw Mumbai Indians thump Kolkata Knight Riders by five wickets in a high-scoring affair. Batting first, KKR posted a challenging total of 185 runs, thanks to a sensational ton from Venkatesh Iyer. In reply, MI chased the target successfully, riding on Ishan Kishan's aggressive fifty and useful knocks from Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma.

After being put into bat, Kolkata Knight Riders had a forgettable start to their innings, as Cameron Green dismissed N Jagadeesan for a five-ball duck in the second over. While Rahmanullah Gurbaz struggled to get going, MI's perennial nemesis Venkatesh Iyer unleashed his vintage best, compiling a sensational hundred and ensuring a solid total for his side.

The swashbuckling batter from Madhya Pradesh went berserk and hammered six boundaries and nine monstrous sixes for his outrageous 51-ball 104.

Besides him, none of the KKR batters looked comfortable in the middle. As a result, the visitors couldn't get the final flourish, finishing their innings on 185 for six in 20 overs.

Debutant Duan Jansen had a disastrous day, conceding 53 runs in his four-over spell. Young spinner Hrithik Shokeen emerged as MI's most successful bowler with two scalps, while Piyush Chawla recorded superb figures of 1 for 19 in his four-over spell.

In response, Mumbai Indians were off to a flier, as Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan stitched a blistering opening stand of 65 runs before KKR's impact substitute Suyash Sharma dismissed the former in the fifth over.

However, Ishan Kishan continued his onslaught on the KKR bowlers to slam a counter-attacking fifty, putting MI on the driving seat.

Before being cleaned up by Varun Chakravarthy, the swashbuckling keeper-batter hammered an explosive 25-ball 58, studded with five boundaries and as many sixes.

After he departed, the dynamic duo of Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma kept the scoreboard ticking with their gorgeous stroke play. While Yadav regained his mojo for a flamboyant 25-ball 43, Varma smashed 30 runs off 25 deliveries.

After Varma became Suyash Sharma's second victim, Tim David played a brilliant 24*-run cameo, making things easier for the hosts alongside Yadav.

Their valiant effort took the game away from KKR's grasp, as Mumbai Indians eventually chased the total with five wickets and 14 balls to spare.
