In a historic turn of events, Indonesia fast bowler Gede Priandana created history by becoming the first player, man or woman, to take five wickets in a single over in an international T20 match. The feat came in the opening T20I of Cambodia’s eight-match tour of Indonesia in Bali on Tuesday, December 23.

Priandana’s five-wicket over flattened Cambodia in a blink

Defending a target of 168, Indonesia were in control but Cambodia were still fighting at 106 for 5 after 15 overs. That changed dramatically when Priandana was handed the ball for the first time in the match. What followed sent shockwaves around the cricketing world.

Priandana took wickts in all his first three deliveries, completing a stunning hat-trick by dismissing Shah Abrar Hussain, Nirmaljit Singh and Chanthoeun Rathanak. A dot ball briefly halted the collapse, but the damage was far from over.

The 28-year-old then removed Mongdara Sok and Pel Vennak to seal the match, to complete his five-wicket haul within just an over as Cambodia went down from 106 for 5 to 107 all out in the space of a single over, managing just one run, a wide, during the unforgettable spell.

Priandana’s 5 for 1 immortalises Indonesian cricket

Earlier in the game, Cambodia won the toss and asked Indonesia to bat first. Priandana had a short stay, scoring 6 off 11 balls while opening the innings with wicketkeeper-batter Dharma Kesuma, who was the star with the bat, smashing an unbeaten 110 off 68 deliveries, powering Indonesia to a formidable total.

However, it was Priandana's sensational bowling figures of 5 for 1 with all five wickets coming in a single over, that stole the spotlight and left the cricketing world in disbelief.

Having said that, this instance of five wickets in an over is not a first time in T20 cricket, as the feat has earlier been achieved in domestic men’s competitions by Bangladesh’s Al-Amin Hossain and Karnataka's Abhimanyu Mithun, but Gede Priandana’s spell stands alone as the first such achievement in a T20I.

Before this, bowlers had managed a maximum of four wickets in an over on 14 occasions in T20Is, with Lasith Malinga’s famous four-in-four balls against New Zealand in 2019 being the most iconic. Priandana’s 5 wickets in an over now stands alone, a rare moment of cricketing history born in Bali.
