Team India annihilated West Indies with four wickets in the opening session to take early honors in the ongoing first Test. Kraigg Brathwaite and Co. found some initial stability in the second session at Dominica’s Windsor Park, before Mohammed Siraj wrecked hosts’ rising hopes by removing a well-set Jason Holder in his comeback spell.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who snared the first two wickets of the innings in the first session, added two more to his tally at the stroke of tea.

Crucial wickets after lunch break ensured that Team India pocketed the afternoon session to make it two out of two on Day 1 so far.

Talking Points

Jadeja deceives Joshua Da Silva

West Indies wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva took guard at the crease to start off the second session of the day. He struggled to put bat to ball throughout his 13-ball stay and he ultimately perished to Indian spinner Ravindra Jadeja for two.

Silva picked up the wrong length and some extra bounce from Jadeja did him in. He became his side’s first casualty of the session and fifth of the innings as the hosts were reduced to 76-5 in just inside 32 overs.

Athanaze forms lower-order resistance with Holder

Young West Indies all-rounder Alick Athanaze, on his Test debut, defied the likes of Ashwin and Jadeja to fight on for his side for a major part of the session. After Silva’s departure from the crease, the cricketer formed a fighting 41-run stand with senior teammate Jason Holder. Most importantly for West Indies, the duo washed up nearly 18 overs in the partnership to keep India waiting for their sixth scalp.

Mohammed Siraj ultimately got the breakthrough the visitors wanted by strangling Holder with a short ball.

Ashwin claims two more to finish off afternoon session

Holder’s wicket exposed the West Indies tail to rampaging Indian bowlers at the stroke of tea. Ravichandran Ashwin took full advantage of the hosts worsening situation and claimed two more wickets, including that of Alick Athanaze.

Tail-enders Rahkeem Cornwall and Kemar Roach are the unbeaten batters and will resume West Indies’ first innings effort at 137-8 in the evening session.

Expectations from Third Session

With the entire WI team at rock bottom, the next session would definately see the Indian batters make way to the Dominican field. The WI team could pose a total of 155/160 at the least considering their performance so far.

It would be interesting to see what India's debut opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal has in store for the match.
