Star India fast bowler Mohammed Siraj is walking a fine line with the International Cricket Council (ICC). He’s just two demerit points away from facing a one-match ban, and if he doesn’t keep his emotions in check, he could find himself sitting out a game very soon.
Siraj recently got into trouble during a match against England. After dismissing Ben Duckett, Siraj gave him an aggressive send-off and even bumped into him with his shoulder, something the ICC didn’t take lightly.
As a result, the ICC fined Siraj 15% of his match fee and gave him one demerit point. That point is now added to a previous demerit point he received during a heated exchange with Australia’s Travis Head in the second match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024 match in Adelaide, for which he was also fined 20% of his match fee.
What Are ICC Demerit Points?
Demerit points are like warning points in cricket. They stay on a player’s record for two years. If a player collects:
- 4 demerit points, they get banned for 1 Test or 2 limited-overs matches.
- 8 demerit points, and the ban doubles.
This was Siraj's second demerit point in a 24-month period, taking his tally to two. One more incident like this, and he’ll be in serious trouble.
According to the ICC, Siraj broke Article 2.5 of the Player’s Code of Conduct. This rule says players must not use language or actions that can provoke or disrespect the batter after a dismissal. In simple terms, no angry send-offs, no taunts, and definitely no physical contact.
What’s Next For Mohammed Siraj?
Siraj is known for his fiery passion on the field, it’s part of what makes him so exciting to watch. But now, the GT pacer needs to keep his emotions in check. If he gets into trouble again, even for something small, he could be banned for one match.
Notably, under ICC regulations, two suspension points translate to a ban from either one Test, two ODIs, or two T20Is, whichever format comes first for the player.
So, while aggression can be a strength for a fast bowler, Siraj will need to find the balance, stay fierce, but stay within the rules.
