The Vijay Hazare Trophy Round 5 saw several Indian stars turning up for their respective states and delivering quality performances throughout the day as teams look to solidify their places in the knockout stage of the competition. Hardik Pandya was among the key names who returned to 50-over cricket for the first time since February to prove his match-fitness.
Devdutt Padikkal once again finds his name in the headlines with another List A century, while Hardik, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma were also among the runs on the day. With the ball, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj all did well.
Here's a brief look at the key performances in Round 5 of the VHT.
Run-machine Padikkal gets another hundred in Karnataka's win over Tripura
Batting first in Ahmedabad, Karnataka lost captain Mayank Agarwal (5) and Karun Nair (0) in quick succession when Devdutt Padikkal and Smaran Ravichandran had a 136-run partnership for the 3rd wicket, where Smaran got 60(82), followed by 65 runs between Padikkal and KL Rahul. The latter scored a quick 35(28), while Padikkal went on to score his 4th hundred in 5 matches to finish with 108(120), and Abhinav Manohar scored a fiery 79*(43) with 6 fours and four sixes.
Tripura never looked alive in the chase due to the constant fall of wickets, reducing them to 59/5 before Rajat Dey scored 66(102) alongside the maiden List A century for Swapnil Singh. Karnataka ended up winning by 80 runs.
Samson's ton helps Kerala cruise past SMAT champions
Starting with Nidheesh MD's 4/46 in his 10 overs, Kerala restricted Jharkhand to 311/7, despite an unbeaten 143 off 137 for Kumar Kushagra with 8 fours and 7 sixes. Ishan Kishan only managed 21(21) before Sanju Samson's match-winning 101(95) at the top of the order with 9 fours and three sixes alongside Rohan Kunnummal's 124(78) with 8 fours and 11 sixes, which helped them chase 311 in only 42.3 overs.
Hardik's century in vain as PBKS' Thakur and Mokhade spoil the party
Hardik Pandya rescued Baroda from a top and middle-order failure with an explosive 133(92) with 8 fours and 11 sixes after walking in to bat at 71/5. He stitched a 65-run partnership with his brother Krunal, who fell for 23(50). The tail further added runs and took Baroda to 293/9, while the Punjab Kings bowler Yash Thakur picked 4/64 (10).
While chasing the target, openers Aman Mokhade and Atharva Taide added 127 runs for the first wicket before Taide fell for 65(53). Mokhade took it upon himself to bat through the innings and finished with 150*(121) with 17 fours and four sixes alongside another fifty for Dhruv Shorey, who finished with 65*(76) to clinch the game by 9 wickets.
Tilak and Siraj lead Hyderabad to 4 points
During the first innings of the Hyderabad vs Chandigarh clash in Rajkot, Tilak Varma walked in at 3 when the score read 25/1 in the 6th over, and he shouldered the responsibility to bat till the end and scored 109(118) with six fours and three sixes. During his innings, he added 114(116) with Abhirath Reddy, who got 71(64) as Hyderabad reached 286/9.
In the second innings, Mohammed Siraj led the bowling attack from the front with an economical spell of 1/19 off 8 overs. Ctl Rakshann picked 3/34 (7) to help them win the match by 137 runs.
Shami and Easwaran stage Bengal's win over Assam
Started with Abhimanyu Easwaran's 102(116) at the top early on in the day, along with Shahabaz Ahmed's quick-fire 66*(57) and a 25*(11) cameo from Mohammed Shami, Bengal scored 302/7 in 50 overs. The batting effort was followed up by a great start from Shami to dismiss two of the top three batters, followed by another wicket late in the innings to finish with 3/55 (9) as they won the match by 86 runs.
Shaw and Ruturaj get going against the mighty Mumbai
During the first innings of the Maharashtra derby in Jaipur, Prithvi Shaw scored 71(75) with 10 fours and a six at the top, stitching a 140-run partnership with opening partner Arshin Kulkarni to set Maharashtra for a strong finish before Ruturaj Gaikwad promoted himself to add another century stand with Arshin, who ended with run-a-ball 114 runs with 11 fours and three sixes. Captain Ruturaj finished strong with 66(52) to his name to take Maharashtra to 366/4 in 50 overs.
In response, Yashasvi Jaiswal fell for 3(9), while Angkrish Raghuvanshi scored 92(88) with 9 fours and two sixes alongside Siddesh Lad's 52(41). However, courtesy of a team effort from Maharashtra bowlers, they won the match by 128 runs.
