Day 3 of the second Test from Edgbaston, Birmingham, proved to be a mixed affair between England and India, as two highly competitive sides engaged in a seesaw battle, ensuring a fair contest. Jamie Smith and Harry Brook stitched a massive 303-run partnership, while Mohammed Siraj rallied for India in Jasprit Bumrah's absence with a six-wicket haul.
Here, we take a look at the highlights of Day 3 of the second Test match, as it panned out at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Friday, July 4.
Harry Brook, Jamie Smith Put Up Record Stand To Badly Punish India After Poor Start
Starting the day with three wickets already down, the English side was in deep trouble early on as their mainstay, Joe Root, and, on the very next delivery, the skipper Ben Stokes departed courtesy of Mohammed Siraj, who put England in trouble with his fiery bowling.
However, despite the trouble, Harry Brook took the opportunity alongside Jamie Smith and went into Bazball mode with their attacking intent, taking on the Indian bowlers one after the other. Harry Brook went on to score 158 off 234 deliveries with 17 boundaries and a six, while Smith remained unbeaten in the end, scoring 184 off 207 deliveries with 21 boundaries and four sixes.
From being 84/5, the duo stitched a 303-run partnership for the sixth wicket, taking England's score to 387 when Brook was knocked over by Akash Deep with a brute of a delivery. However, when Brook departed, the game turned around all of a sudden, as England collapsed from being 387 for five to getting all out for 407 in a matter of just 20 runs, losing five wickets with Siraj and Akash Deep doing most of the damage.
Mohammed Siraj Shocks England With A 6-Wicket Haul As India Finished The Day On A High
Akash Deep picked four wickets for 88 runs, while Siraj turned out to be the real villain for England, picking a six-wicket haul for 70 runs in his 19.3 overs. Mohammed Siraj rattled the English batting lineup with his pace and consistency while also gathering swing, as he turned out to be the hero for the Indian bowling lineup. Jasprit Bumrah's absence was never felt, as he dismissed the lower order without any fuss.
In the end, England's 407 proved to be 180 runs short of India's mammoth total of 587, as India, with just more than an hour left, came in to bat. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul started off brilliantly with a 51-run opening stand for the first wicket when Jaiswal was trapped in front by Josh Tongue for 28.
However, the duo of KL Rahul and Karun Nair steadied the ship as they saw through the end of the day until stumps by the end of the 13th over, when India's score was 64 with just one wicket down, as they now currently lead by 244 runs by the end of day 3.
