Pitch at the Gabba for 2nd Ashes Test [Source: @andymcg_cricket/X]
England had a disastrous start to the Ashes 2025-26, as Australia crushed them comfortably by eight wickets in the opening game that lasted only two days. While Ben Stokes' men would love to bounce back with a series-levelling win in the second Test, the pitch at the Gabba in Brisbane might spoil their party.
Green top spotted at Gabba: A recipe for England's Ashes nightmare?
The first image of the pitch at the Gabba in Brisbane has taken the internet by storm. As it's evident from the picture inserted above, chances are high that Australia will dish out a green top with significant assistance for fast bowlers for the second Ashes Test.
England's star-studded batting unit, inspired by the much-talked-about ruthless Bazball strategy, struggled to get going against the Aussie attack, led by Mitchell Starc, in Perth. So, considering how they fared in the first Test, we doubt if England can survive the Australian hostility if a green top is indeed dished out in Brisbane.
The Gabba Brisbane pitch report explained
With three days left for the second Test, we can expect some grass to be trimmed off the Brisbane deck. That said, the surface generally offers significant lateral movement and steep bounce to the fast bowlers, making things challenging for the batters.
While Australia found a way to tackle the English pacers in the second innings of the Perth Test, the same thing can't be said about the visitors, who were comfortably neutralised in both innings. So, the conditions in Brisbane will likely challenge England's survival technique, and we genuinely doubt if they will tweak their approach for a better outcome.
England's horrible record in Brisbane and pink-ball Tests worsen their chances further
Apart from a potential green deck, factors that can hamper England's Ashes comeback chances are their terrible record at the venue as well as in pink-ball Tests.
While the Englishmen have lost five out of seven day-night Tests, their last win at the Gabba dates back to 1986. All in all, challenges are aplenty for the visitors, and it will be interesting to see if they can snatch a victory against the odds.
