Johnson Charles' late blitz with the bat helped Comilla Victorians to beat Sylhet Strikers by seven wickets in Bangladesh Premier League 2023 Final at Shere Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. The defending champions started their campaign with three defeats in a row but managed to win each and every game since then to clinch their fourth title in history.

Shanto, Rahim powered Sylhet to a formidable total

After being asked to bat first, Sylhet Strikers got off to a flying start as Najmul Shanto smashed Andre Russell for 18 runs in the very first over. However, Sylhet got things back in control as they took two quick wickets to reduce Comilla to 26 for two in the first three overs. Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim joined hands with Shanto and the duo ended the powerplay with 42 on the board and no further damage.

Following the powerplay, both Shanto and Rahim started to open their hands and kept the scoreboard moving. They went on to add 79 runs for the third wicket. Moeen Ali got the much needed breakthrough for the Victorians, bowling Shanto out for 64 off 45, but Rahim, who went on to score an unbeaten 74 off 48, took the charge from there and helped Sylhet post a formidable 175 for seven in the first innings.

Chasing 176, Comilla got off to a shaky start as they managed to have 49 on the board at the end of the powerplay but lost two wickets. Litton Das and Johnson Charles tried to stitch a partnership in order to keep their side in the chase. Das completed his half century off 36 balls but was soon dismissed by Rubel Hossain.

Comilla needed 52 off the last four overs and Sylhet looked to have the upper hand ahead of the death overs. However, Charles, who was batting at a run-a-ball 39, changed the game on his head, smashing Rubel for 23 runs in the 17th over and Comilla needed less than 10 runs per over.

Charles further smashed Luke Wood for 18 runs in the penultimate over, leaving only three runs to get in the final over. Sylhet must have felt horribly broken to allow Charles with a life early in the innings. The St. Lucian remained unbeaten with a 52-ball 79 and Comilla Victorians comfortably got over the line with four balls to spare.
