In a significant development in the fourth Test between India and England, Ben Stokes has decided to retire hurt as the England captain failed to continue because of cramps. The southpaw was batting brilliantly, but suffered a cramp in his left leg while he was attempting a reverse sweep.

Stokes continued to bat despite pain, but decided to stop putting effort on the injured leg and walked off the field before the start of the 117th over. The crowd rose to their feet to applaud Stokes, who scored a fifty, his first of the ongoing five-match tour. Further, Jamie Smith walked to bat.

Ben Stokes' Bowling Under Threat?

This is the first time in Ben Stokes' career that the England captain opted to retire hurt. Stokes was batting on 66 when he decided to leave the field. One of the reason behind the decision could be his bowling under threat.

Notably, Stokes has been England's one of the best bowlers and also took a five-wicket haul in the first innings to help England reduce India to just 358 runs. Thus, Ben wouldn't want the cramp to grow which would result in him not bowling in the second innings.

Can Ben Stokes Bat Again In This Innings?

The biggest question in fan's mind is whether Stokes can come back to bat or not. Notably, the England captain is eligible to bat again in the first innings if he wishes to as he left the field after hurting himself.

If a batter opts to retire out of his will, then the law doesn't allow him to get back. However, in case of injuries, a player can return to bat, just like Rishabh Pant did in the first innings for India.
